The ASME/ANSI B16.47 Flange Series B Blind Flange is a type of flange designed for use in high-pressure, high-temperature applications. It conforms to the requirements of the ASME/ANSI B16.47 Series B standard, which covers large-diameter steel flanges that range from NPS 26 through NPS 60 (nominal pipe size).

Blind flanges are typically used to seal the end of a pipe or valve, and they are often used to isolate sections of a pipeline during maintenance or repair. They are also used to close off the end of a pipeline that is not in use. The ASME/ANSI B16.47 Series B standard specifies the dimensions, tolerances, materials, and testing requirements for these flanges.

One of the key benefits of Series B blind flanges is their ability to provide a strong and reliable seal in high-pressure and high-temperature applications. They are designed to withstand extreme conditions, and they are often used in critical applications such as oil and gas pipelines, chemical processing, and power generation.

The ASME/ANSI B16.47 Series B standard provides detailed dimensions for the blind flange, including the bolt-hole pattern, gasket surface, and other critical features. The standard also specifies the materials that can be used for the flange, including carbon steel, stainless steel, and other alloys.

In addition to their strength and durability, Series B blind flanges are also easy to install and maintain. They can be quickly bolted onto the end of a pipe or valve, and they are designed to be easy to remove and replace as needed. This makes them an ideal solution for pipelines and equipment that require frequent maintenance or repair.

In summary, ASME/ANSI B16.47 Flange Series B Blind Flanges are a type of flange that conform to the requirements of the ASME/ANSI B16.47 Series B standard. They are designed for use in high-pressure and high-temperature applications and are commonly used in the oil and gas, chemical processing, and power generation industries. These flanges provide a strong and reliable seal for the end of a pipe or valve and are easy to install and maintain.

Here is a table outlining the specifications and characteristics of ASME/ANSI B16.47 Series B Blind Flanges:

Specification/FeatureDescription
StandardASME/ANSI B16.47 Series B Blind Flange.
TypeBlind Flange – A type of flange with no bore (opening) in the center, used to block off a pipe or vessel opening.
Pressure RatingAvailable in various pressure ratings, such as 150, 300, 600, 900, etc., depending on the application requirements.
Size RangeTypically available in a wide range of sizes to accommodate different pipe and equipment dimensions.
MaterialCan be manufactured from a variety of materials, including carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, etc., chosen based on application requirements.
Facing TypeSeries B Blind Flanges typically have Raised Face (RF) facing, providing a reliable sealing surface.
Bolt Hole Quantity and DiameterThe number and diameter of bolt holes vary with flange size and pressure rating, facilitating flange connection.
Seal TypeSeries B Blind Flanges commonly use gaskets or O-rings for sealing.
Performance CharacteristicsKnown for their high-pressure-bearing capacity, durability, and suitability for critical applications.
Application AreasWidely used in industries such as oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation, and more for sealing off pipe or vessel openings.
Manufacturing StandardsManufactured in compliance with ASME/ANSI B16.47 Series B standard and relevant ASME codes.
ASME/ANSI B16.47 Series B Blind Flanges Main Features and Specifications Table

This table provides a comprehensive overview of ASME/ANSI B16.47 Series B Blind Flanges, including their specifications, characteristics, and application areas. Specific requirements may vary depending on the chosen flange size, pressure rating, and material.

The blind flange is basically a flange that does not have a hub or a boring center. Blind flanges have the face thickness of a flange, a matching face type, and a similar bolting pattern. Blind flanges can also be used to seal a nozzle opening on a pressure vessel.

The most common two types are the flat face (FF) and the raised face (RF) blind flange. A flat face flange is completely smooth and level across the surface. The raised face flange has a slightly elevated middle area that creates two levels on the surface of the flange.

Similar to a regular flange, a blind flange has mounting holes around the perimeter and the gasket sealing rings are machined into the mating surface. The difference is that a blind flange has no opening for fluids to pass through. Instead, it is placed in between two open flanges, which stops the flow through a pipe.

Generally speaking, ASME B16 47 Series A flanges are much thicker, heavier and stronger than Series B flanges in the same size and pressure rating thus can withstand more external loading than Series B type. ASME B16.47 Series B flanges need more but smaller fasteners (bolts & nuts) than Series A flanges and have a smaller bolt circle diameter than that of Series A flanges. The smaller bolt circle diameter results in less flange movement after installation. Both Series A and Series B standards define weld neck flanges and blind flanges in raised face type (RF) but only Series A defines ring type joint (RTJ) flanges from Class 300 through Class 900 within this standard. From a commercial point of view, ASME B16.47 Series A flanges are more expensive than ASME B16 47 Series B flanges.

47 series A or series B for weld neck and blind flanges. Series A flange is heavier, thicker, and costs more whereas the series B flange has more bolt holes and is lighter and cheaper than series A. API605 flange and series B flanges are the same thing.

The table demonstrates that DIN requires stricter tolerance than ASME. For the ½-inch drive, DIN allows 0.11 tolerance while ASTM allows 0.218, resulting in a discrepancy of 0.108mm. In other words, DIN and ANSI impact sockets are not the same and their differences should be carefully noted.

Blind flanges are commonly produced and stocked in several different materials. They are often called Blank Flanges. These flanges are used for capping off or terminating another flange. Hayward Pipe distributes industrial and commercial flanges in all the materials listed below.

ASME B16 47 Series A flanges are thicker, heavier, and stronger than their Series B counterparts. They also can often handle more external loading than Series B. Series A flanges tend to be more costly than Series B flanges.
