Socket Weld Flange Materials & Grades
Socket Weld flanges are available in a variety of materials. These materials must meet the standards. The material should also meet the quality specified by ASTM or ASME standards. The thickness and inner diameter of the flange will depend on the size of the pipe for which this socket weld flange is manufactured.
Carbon alloys are common manufacturing materials for Socket Weld flanges as they are resistant to extreme temperatures. It is available in two materials, ASTM A 181 and ASTM A 105. The flanges are available in a variety of grades, such as ASME B16 47 ‘A’ series and ‘B’ series, to meet the needs of customers and industries.
Apart from this material, socket weld flanges are also available in stainless steel. Flanges are made of ASTM A182, F304, 316L, 347H, 310S, ASME B16 5, and with duplex steel facing. The following table is the grade of these common materials:

- 1/2″ NPS Socket Weld flange has an inner diameter of 0.62″ and an outer diameter of 3.50″. The raised face thickness is 1.88″ and has four bolt holes.
- 3/4″ NPS flange has an inner diameter of 0.82″ and an outer diameter of 3.88″. The raised face thickness is 2.06″ with four bolt holes.
- 1″ NPS Socket Weld flange has an inner diameter of 1.05″ and an outer diameter of 4.25″. The raised face thickness is 2.19″ and the standard bolt holes are four numbers.
- 2″ NPS Socket Weld flange has an inner diameter of 2.07″ and an outer diameter of 6.00″ and a raised face thickness of 2.50″. · The 5″ NPS flange has an ID of 5.05″ and an OD of 10.00″. The raised face thickness is 3.50″.
- The 6″ NPS flange has an ID of 6.065″ and an OD of 11.00″. The raised face thickness is 3.50″.
- The 10″ NPS flange has an ID of 10.02″ and an OD of 16″. The raised face thickness is 4.00″.
- The 20″ NPS flange has an ID of 19.25″ and an OD of 27.50″. The raised face thickness is 5.69″.

What is Socket Weld Flanges?
Socket-weld flange refers to a flange in which the end of the pipe is inserted into the flange ring step and welded at the pipe end and the outside.
This flange is available in two types: with neck and without neck. Neck pipe flanges are suitable for pressures of 1.0~10.0MPa due to their good rigidity, small welding deformation, and good sealing.

Socket Weld flanges were initially developed for use on small-size high-pressure piping. Their static strength is equal to Slip On flanges, but their fatigue strength is 50% greater than double-welded Slip On flanges. The connection with the pipe is done with 1 fillet weld, at the outside of the flange.
The socket-welded flange shape is similar to a slip-on flange, differently it has a shoulder at the inner bore. Slip On Flange – No shoulder at the inner bore. Socket weld flange static strength is equal to the slip-on flange, but its fatigue strength is 50% higher than the double-welded slip-on flange.
Socket welding (SW) is used for welding pipes and fittings including reducers, tees, and elbows. Socket weld pipe fittings are used to permanently join pipes that are inserted into a recess in the fitting, flange, or valve. Once correctly inserted, fillet-type sealing welds are applied to join the pipe to the fitting.
Socket Weld Flanges are available in pressure from 150# and up and pipe schedule 40 to schedule 160. Specifying the pipe schedule ensures that the ID of the SW Flange matches the ID of the pipe for smooth fluid flow.
A Socket Weld is a pipe attachment detail in which a pipe is inserted into a recessed area of a Valve, fitting or flange. In contrast to buttweld fittings, Socket Weld fittings are mainly used for small pipe diameters (Small Bore Piping); generally for piping whose nominal diameter is NPS 2 or smaller.
