Socket Weld Flange Materials & Grades
Socket weld flanges are available in a variety of materials. These materials must meet the standards. The material should also meet the quality specified by ASTM or ASME standards. The thickness and inner diameter of the flange depend on the size of the pipe for which this Socket weld flanges is manufactured.
Carbon steel flanges are commonly used manufacturing materials for Socket weld flanges. You can choose the appropriate material according to the medium of the pipeline. You can choose ASTM A105 for normal temperature, ASTM A350 for low temperature, and ASTM A694 for high temperature.

- 3/4″ NPS flange has an inner diameter of 0.82″ and an outer diameter of 3.88″. The raised face thickness is 0.62″ with 4 bolt holes.
- 1″ NPS flange has an inner diameter of 1.05″ and an outer diameter of 4.25″. The raised face thickness is 0.68″ and the standard bolt holes are 4 numbers.

What is Socket Weld Flanges?
Socket-weld flange refers to a flange in which the end of the pipe is inserted into the flange ring step and welded at the pipe end and the outside.
This flange is available in two types: with neck and without neck. Neck pipe flanges are suitable for pressures of 1.0~10.0MPa due to their good rigidity, small welding deformation, and good sealing.

Socket Weld flanges were initially developed for use on small-size high-pressure piping. Their static strength is equal to Slip On flanges, but their fatigue strength is 50% greater than double-welded Slip On flanges. The connection with the pipe is done with 1 fillet weld, at the outside of the flange.
The socket-welded flange shape is similar to a slip-on flange, differently it has a shoulder at the inner bore. Slip On Flange – No shoulder at the inner bore. Socket weld flange static strength is equal to the slip-on flange, but its fatigue strength is 50% higher than the double-welded slip-on flange.
Socket welding (SW) is used for welding pipes and fittings including reducers, tees, and elbows. Socket weld pipe fittings are used to permanently join pipes that are inserted into a recess in the fitting, flange, or valve. Once correctly inserted, fillet-type sealing welds are applied to join the pipe to the fitting.
Socket Weld Flanges are available in pressure from 150# and up and pipe schedule 40 to schedule 160. Specifying the pipe schedule ensures that the ID of the SW Flange matches the ID of the pipe for smooth fluid flow.
A Socket Weld is a pipe attachment detail in which a pipe is inserted into a recessed area of a Valve, fitting or flange. In contrast to buttweld fittings, Socket Weld fittings are mainly used for small pipe diameters (Small Bore Piping); generally for piping whose nominal diameter is NPS 2 or smaller.
